Welcome to Not in Iowa Anymore!

If you want to travel the world, or simply travel from the safety of your iPad, this blog is for you!  The purpose of this site is to share travel advice, experiences, and lessons learned along the way.  Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just getting started, this blog has something for you.

If you’d like to know more about me, I recommend you visit the aptly named About Me page.

The rest of this blog is divided into the following sections:

  • Adventures: Fantastical stories of our adventures (for better or for worse!).
    • Happy Trails: Only the good stuff.  Happy and inspiring stories from our globe-trotting adventures.
    • What’s the Worst that Could Happen: One of the biggest reasons folks don’t travel is fear. Some fears are legitimate (i.e. malaria in Uganda) and some overblown (i.e. terrorist attack).  Personally, I think the fear that keeps most people from traveling is fear of the unknown.  So in that vein, and slightly in jest, I thought I’d share some of our worst travel horror stories.  (No blogger was seriously hurt in the making of these stories.)
    • Traveling for Good: Here I humbly share the stories of the selfless and incredible people we have been fortunate enough to meet on our travels, who are doing great things for their fellow humans and the planet
  • Travel Tips: Want advice about best travel practices learned from life on the road?  This section is for you!
  • Destinations: This section includes stories and photos from many of the over 45 countries we have had the opportunity to visit.  (And hopefully many more to come!)
  • World Classroom: These posts are all about one of my favorite things about traveling…. Learning!
    • Environmental: I am a biologist at a community college, where I teach general biology and environmental science.  Traveling allows me to experience up-close the world’s varied ecosystems, the many living things that call them home, and how various human populations interact with their environment.
    • Social: Traveling teaches me more about humanity than I ever could learn from a book.  Geography, politics, and sociology all come alive in profoundly meaningful ways. In addition, Hubby and I have a unique perspective, as Hubby is a black man and I am a white woman.  Here I share sometimes touchy, but important, stories and lessons learned.
    • Musical: Want a musician’s perspective?  Visit Hubby’s page!
